You are moving abroad with your family

Are you moving abroad with your child(ren)? Then your entitlement to the Groeipakket will cease at the end of the month you move house.

Depending on the country where you are going to live, you may still be entitled to family benefits from the Groeipakket if one of the parents:

  • works or receives benefits in Flanders,
  • is seconded (in placement).

Contact your Groeipakket payment fund to find out whether you are still entitled to family benefits in your situation.

Your child is studying abroad

Children who study in another country of the EEA* or Switzerland have the same rights as children in Flanders. There is also a right to a Groeipakket if the child:

  • is attending non-higher or higher education recognized by the country where the child is studying
  • at least 17 lessons per week in non-higher education.

Even if your child is studying in another country, you may still be entitled to (a limited amount of) family benefits.

These regulations are complex. Contact your Groeipakket payment fund to find out what you are entitled to in your situation.

Your child lives abroad

Does your child live in or will he/she move to another country of the EEA*, Switzerland or a country with which Belgium has a bilateral agreement **? Then you may be entitled to family benefits from the Groeipakket.

These regulations are complex. Contact your Groeipakket payment fund to find out what you are entitled to in your situation. If you do not have a Flemish payment fund, please contact one of the Groeipakket payment funds.

You are working abroad

Let your Groeipakket payment fund know that you are working abroad. Your payment fund will then investigate what you are entitled to in your situation.

As long as your children live in Flanders, they may continue to be entitled to the Groeipakket. In addition, you must also apply for family benefits in the country where you work. This is necessary to keep your file in order. If you work in a member state of the European Union, you can apply for family benefits at the liaison body.

It is not possible to combine the full amounts of family benefits from Flanders and the country where you work.

Are you entitled to family benefits in the country where you work, but another parent (or partner of a parent) works in Belgium? Then your Flemish payment fund continues to pay the family benefit.

If nobody works in Belgium, your Flemish payment fund can pay an additional amount if the amount in the other country is lower than the amount in Flanders. This way you always get the highest amount.
