What is the family size?

We calculate your family size in 'points' for your family or 'living unit'.

The higher the number of points in your living unit, the higher the income threshold for the entitlement.

Who belongs to your family?

  • We check to see who is residing at the same address as the pupil on 31 August.
  • We determine whose income to use as the basis for the family situation (status) of the pupil.
  • We check who is dependent on the person or persons whose income we are going to use for the calculation.

Those are the persons who make up the living unit of the pupil.

What is the scoring?

Who? Calculating number
of points
One starting point for all families, except single person and independent pupils without children 1
One additional point for each person in the family who for tax purposes is dependent on the persons whose income we use to calculate the allowance + 1
One point for each pupil in the family who is no longer dependent for tax purposes, but is still not an independent, married or single person pupil + 1
One additional point for each person in the family who is following higher education (including bachelor-after-bachelor or master-after-master). The total number of points for these reasons are reduced by 1 point and can never be less than 0 + 1
One additional point for each person in the living unit who, on 31 August before the school year concerned, was disabled for at least 66% (at least 4 points in column 1) + 1

The same person in the family can count for different points. For example: if a brother of the pupil is dependent for tax reasons and has a handicap, he counts for 2 points.

If, according to this table, you are entitled to a school allowance, you must still check whether you satisfy the test on cadastral income.
If you do not have any cadastral income, that will, of course, be unnecessary.
